Leather restoration of an Alma PM by Louis Vuitton

The Alma PM by Louis Vuitton is a timeless piece defined by its structured silhouette, elegant lines, and distinctive details that have become an enduring signature of the French maison’s leather goods. The conservation restoration of this Alma PM was guided by the need to restore brightness and balance without altering the bag’s original character.

Before: worn, weak and scuffed
Crafted in Epi leather—one of ’s most iconic finishes—this bag is distinguished by its firm, resistant grain, designed to ensure structure and durability over time. While highly performance-driven, this embossed surface may, with use, develop subtle colour shifts and a loss of luminosity.
As is often the case with lighter-toned bags, time gradually alters the appearance of the leather. Exposure to light, daily contact with the hands, and the natural absorption of impurities can lead the colour to darken over time, giving the surface a heavier, seemingly “dulled” appearance. The careful conservation restoration of the leather took these natural changes into account, respecting both the characteristics of the material and the everyday life of a much-loved bag.

The restoration process began with a thorough cleaning of both the interior and exterior, using products specifically formulated for the particular type of leather used in the bag. Each surface was treated with great care, with the intensity and techniques carefully adjusted according to the material’s sensitivity and the varying degrees of wear across different areas.

Particular care was devoted to the handles, the elements that most clearly reflect the passage of time and the bag’s everyday use. Continuous contact with the skin—also influenced by the use of cosmetic products such as moisturising creams—had in fact altered the original surface, making it darker and more lustrous. Through a precise process of cleaning, rebalancing, and refinement of the finishes, the handles regained uniformity and structure while preserving the natural softness of the leather. The edges of the handles were hand-finished with edge dye, an essential step to restore a clean, refined appearance and protect the finishes without stiffening the material.

Applying and smoothing leather fillers
The base of the bag—an area most exposed to friction and wear—was treated with particular care. After a light surface preparation and targeted work on the most marked areas, it was recoloured to restore chromatic continuity and reinforce the protection of the leather. All work was carried out in full respect of the bag’s original stitching, detailing, and proportions, through highly precise handcraft techniques.

Painting, sanding and polishing
The interior, lined with fabric, underwent a thorough cleaning and stain-removal process using products specifically formulated for textiles, with particular attention to the most visible signs of use and the areas most prone to absorption.
Although no restoration work was required, the metal components were also carefully cleaned through a discreet and functional process aimed at preserving their integrity and overall aesthetic harmony.

The restored bag
The final result restores brightness, balance, and refinement to the Alma PM, without erasing the natural traces of time and use. A respectful restoration, carried out to accompany the bag’s continued life and preserve its elegance, functionality, and identity—an identity that emerges from the encounter between a luxury object and the personal relationship its owner has built with it.
